Ulster Senior semi final report
Antrim beaten by a point.
Ulster Senior Camogie Championship semi-final from Ahoghill
Antrim 1-10 Derry 2-08 ref: Phil McDonald Cavan.
Antrim lost this game by a single point after a mighty effort to overcome the holders Derry in today's semi-final at sunny Ahoghill. With a young team Antrim seemed to struggle throughout the game with Derry's bigger ,stronger players but certainly matched them for skill in a first class game of camogie .
Antrim went three points ahead before Derry could settle with Lucia McNaughton ,Niamh Donnelly and sister Áine all taking points from play. Derry inevitably came into the game, however, and in a short space of time pushed into the lead with points from Aine McAllister and Mairead McNicholl on either side of an opportunist goal from Grainne McGoldrick. Antrim worked hard to get back ahead with Lucia McNaughton in great form and had the visitors on the back foot for some time but missed a number of chances and only managed a Caoimhe Wright point before the interval to leave a half time score of Antrim 0-04 Derry 1-02
Antrim introduced Áine Mulholland for Cliodhna Donnelly at half time and the second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Antrim taking the first three scores. Katie McAleese converted a 45 before Orlagh O'Hara took off on a good run down the left wing .Her shot was parried by Derry Keeper Niamh McQuillan but an inrushing Caoimhe McAleenan forced the sliotar into the net with a single handed stroke. A few moments later O'Hara converted a fine point from distance. Antrim were four points ahead at this point but somehow seemed to run out of steam for a ten minute period in which Derry clawed back two points via Eilis Cassidy and Caoimhe Glass and then took the lead with a Dervla O'Kane goal following sloppy defending from Antrim who failed to clear a dangerous ball into the square despite a couple of opportunities. Katie McAleese took her first point of the game from a free for Antrim to level the game again but within a short time Grainne McGoldrick took a nice point for Derry and they pushed ahead again with a 20m Free from the same player. Caoimhe McAleenan put over a nice point for the Saffrons and then McAleese for Antrim and McGoldrick for Derry both converted frees . As the game reached its closing stages Aoife Shaw took Derry's final point and Aine Donnelly with Antrim's last effort took a point which could have been a goal opportunity. The game finished with Derry winning by a point and both teams having given their all. Charley McCarry and Aimee Boyle of Loughgiel made their senior debuts as second half substitutes. managers Aidan McKeown and Joe Baldwin and coach Pat Ryan from Limerick were disappointed for Antrim but felt that their young squad is heading in the right direction by making steady progress. Antrim's next competitive game will be their Intermediate Championship opener away to Kilkenny on 17th June.
