Saffron Minors too strong for Derry

26 Mar 2018

Antrim 4-18 Derry 0-3

Holders Antrim easily secured their place in this season’s All-Ireland minor B semi-final after this canter at Ahoghill.

It is fully a month since their last outing, but Antrim quickly imposed themselves on this game with Maura Downey scoring a goal inside two minutes. Maura, playing on her home pitch, quickly posted a point and Roisin McCormick fired over two more before Aisling Porter eventually got Derry on the score-sheet.

However it was only a temporary break in service and Antrim went on to a 2-9 to 0-1 interval lead with CiaraLaverty grabbing the second goal just before the break.

On the re-start Roisin McCormick pointed twice before floating a great side-line across for her Loughgiel team-mate Charley McCarry to bury in the net.

McCormick went on to add a further three points to bring her tally to eight, while Ciara Laverty scored a second goal in the 21st minute.

There were decent performances from Aisling Porter, Nicole Nugent, Niamh Gribben and Sinéad McGill for Derry, but they were out-gunned by a strong Saffron team.

On Saturday Westmeath defeated Kildare by 4-13 to 3-9 and that guarantees semi-final places for Antrim and Westmeath ahead of their meeting in the final round robin league games this coming weekend.

In the other section Laois defeated Carlow and will probably top that section now with Carlow in second place.
