Doherty Woodshavings Junior Shield Final 2017

St.Pauls V Ahoghill 30th Aug  Referee :Paul McDonnell (Rossa)

Having home advantage and  being last year's Shield winners gave St. Pauls a slight psychological advantage and this was borne out as they attacked Ahoghill with all hurls blazing from the throw-in . Ahoghill ,despite showing good form in the league this season, appeared sluggish and by half-time the home side had notched  up a comfortable 3-08 to 0-04 lead with goals from Bronagh Reilly, Aisling Reilly and Mairead McKernan. They would have has a much bigger interval lead only for an outstanding performance in goals from Caitriona Graham for  Ahoghill.

The second half saw a turn-around as Ahoghill became much more assertive and pinned Naomh Pól back behind their own `65 for the best part of twenty minutes. Senior County regular Noreen Graham started finding gaps in the home defence and set up a superbly struck goal for Mairead McMaster . A few quick points helped Ahoghill creep closer to levelling the scores and Caitriona Graham came out of nets to throw her skills behind the comeback with sister Áine taking over as keeper. St. Pauls steadied the ship a little with points from corner forward Fionnghuala Rocks and the energetic Mairead McKernan who stood out at centre half forward. The game reached a climax as both Caitriona and Noreen Graham added goals for Ahoghill in a frenzied finale but as the visitors ran out of steam , St. Pauls added late goals through Aisling Reilly and Mairead McKernan to give the holders a comfortable 10 point margin.

In an ideal world  these very competitive and entertaining shield finals should be played at neutral venues but pitch availability in County Antrim in championship season makes neutral venues a big ask.

Final score St. Pauls 5-13 Ahoghill 3-09.
