Comprehensive win for Antrim in Intermediate Championship
Antrim V Kildare ( Liberty Insurance Intermediate Camogie Championship Group 2)
from Tír na nÓg Randalstown 21-07-18 referee Philip McDonald
The two bottom teams in championship group two met today in a dead rubber game with only county pride at stake yet it turned out to be an interesting game of camogie with some fine skills on show. Antrim took control of the game from the throw-in and ran up four consecutive points .Katie McAleese took the first after good work from Amy Boyle, Meadbh Kelly the second and Roisin McCormick the third before McAleese converted a long range free following a foul on Katherine Mullan. Having established an early lead the Saffrons eased off the pressure a little and allowed the visitors back into the game. Kildare took the next six scores to forge ahead with centre half -forward Melissa Lyons converting two frees and taking a brace from play as well . Maher and O'Brien added a point each for the Lily whites and the game developed into a tale of two number elevens as Katie McAleese stormed back for Antrim with four consecutive points ,including three from play.
Lea Sutton made it a one point difference with a nice point for Kildare but a touch of magic from Roisin McCormick produced a fine goal as the young Loughgiel player slammed the sliotar home after a good run. A few more points were exchanged in a high intensity game to leave a half time score of Antrim 1-10 Kildare 0-08
The second half saw Antrim in determined mood to stretch their lead and they took four of the first five scores . Amy Boyle, who worked very hard throughout the game, scored a nice point before another touch of McCormick magic gave Antrim their second goal. Katie McAleese reinforced Antrim's lead with a couple of well taken points from placed balls. Kildare came gradually back into the game thanks to Melissa Lyons who put a couple of frees over the bar and then broke through the Antrim back line on a great run to smash home a stylish goal. The Saffrons soon responded however with Meadbh Kelly and Charley McCarry adding points and a fine goal from Ashling McFadden sounded the death -Knell for Kildare who only managed one more point in the game. A goal from Antrim substitute Kirsty McKendry put the icing on the cake for Antrim and further points from Katie McAleese and Charlie McCarry left Antrim running out as winners by a final score of 4-17 to 1-12.
Antrim will take encouragement from this win after failing to field in their last game against Tipperary and they complete the championship campaign with a visit to Westmeath on August 4th.
